Animal Welfare - from OK to Great
Karolina Westlund helps pet owners and people working professionally with animals to get happier, reasonably well behaved animals that thrive in the care of humans. She teaches animal behaviour management through blog posts, the odd facebook live session or webinar, as well as more extensive online courses. She is an associate professor of Ethology at Stockholm University and sometimes publishes scientific articles related to enrichment, animal training, and wellbeing.
Ask three people what animal welfare is, and they’ll likely give you three different answers. Though they may disagree about the relative importance of physical health, the absence of psychological suffering or the importance of performing natural behaviour, they’ll probably agree on one thing: giving control to animals improves their welfare. In this presentation, Karolina will discuss perspectives on animal welfare, the Core Affect Space model, and how providing control through enrichment and training may move the individuals in our care from a neutral to a positive welfare state.
